It is situated at the bank of river Ganga, where the Ganga descends from the hills to the north India plains. It is among the seven sacred cities of India and also one of the four venues for the great “Kumbh Mela”, held in every 12 years along with Allahbad, Nasik and Ujjain. Millions of people come here for a dip into Ganga during the Kumbh Mela. Next Maha Kumbh Mela will be held in 2010 in Haridwar and Uttaranchal Govt. is ready for Kumbh Mela 2010. “Har ki Pairi” means “Footsteps of God”, is the center of all type of Hindu’s worships. Here are lots of temples and ashrams in Haridwar. It is also a centre of herbal medicine, and traditional studies at Gurukul Kangri. Prime Attraction of Haridwar Mansa Devi Temple: Just 3.5 kms from the city, situated at the top of Bilwa Parvat. It is connected by ropeway trolley (Udan Khatola) or peoples can also reach there by foot. You can catch a beautiful seen of Haridwar city from the top. Chandi Devi Temple: It’s around 6 kms away from the city, situated at the top of Neel Parvat. The temple is situated at the opposite site of “Har ki Pauri”. It is also connected by ropeway trolley (Udan Khatola). Rajaji National Park: Haridwar is also a popular destination for nature and adventures lovers. The Park is around 10 kms from the city; it covers 820 sq. km area, which attracts to wildlife lovers. You can see to elephants roaming majestically in the jungle. Fishing is allowed with permits. Best time to visit is 15th November to 15th June. Entry is restricted before sunrise and after sunset. How to Reach By Air: The nearest domestic airport is Jolly Grant in Dehradun. The state Govt. buses and taxis are available from Dehradun to Haridwar, distance is around 52 kms. By Train: It is well connected to all major cities of India by rail. The nearest railway station is in Haridwar. So, it is a major source of transportation for tourist. By Road: It is well connected by road with all major cities of India. The National Highway no. 45 crosses the city. The distance is around 200 kms from Delhi, 52 kms from Dehradun and 15 kms from Rishikesh.
